WORKING WEEK 2

I've been really busy/too tired when I get in from work to update this diary.
Apologies, I know my parents worry so for them and anyone else who's worried: I am alive!

Monday 16.04.2012

Today I spent the day running errands for Carly. First stop was Canal Street (no, not like the one in Manchester) to pick up some sheets of plastic to be laser cut. I'd picked up some samples the laser cutters had done for her last week, but a couple of the samples were too thin. So after buying the thicker sheets, I grabbed a coffee and jumped back on the subway up to the laser cutting company. The girl that works there is super friendly, so it was an errand I was happy to run. I did a bit of work in the studio, I re-toiled a pair of trousers ready for the fitting on Wednesday, and ran a couple more errands around the Fashion District, it was super hot and my feet were killing; I really need to buy those trainers. ASAP!

Sourcing leather!
One of my favourite work days so far. I love leather, so sourcing it and knowing that someone else is paying is super fun! More fun is that it's not just any leather Carly wants, oh no, it's neon leather. This girl does not do things by halves (I seriously cannot wait for the collection to come together!) Whilst out I came across these amazing neon python skins:

There were other python skins that still had their heads on and some even had their creepy little snake tongues poking out, which I do have a photo of but because I love my mother very dearly and know that the neon skins will probably have been pushing it a little far with her fear, I'll restrain from posting them (I might put it on t'other blog so check that if you're weird)

On sort of a side note:
It's really strange the contrast of people you get in the fabric shops around the area, some are so stuck up and boring, yet you get others like the lady in Leather, Suede and Skins (where the neon snakeskins are from) who is the best! She is the nicest, it really makes a difference when you get someone who takes time to help you and is genuinely friendly, especially somewhere so crowded like New York.

Back at the studio, Carly's struggling to get all her shoes from her sponsor as the shoe they've been providing is now sold-out almost everywhere. So I spent the last hour of work phoning around all the stores in the local area...20 stores later, we may have 4 more pairs! Success!

Wednesday 18.04.2012

Got up super early today, had a brief half-hour Skype with my Mam, then headed into work via a fabric store to get swatches as they only do samples for students before 9am.

I grabbed breakfast and coffees on the way in, and got to the studio for about 9:20 as Carly was meant to have a fitting at 9:30, however this had all been rearranged so whilst Carly worked on her portfolio for a later tutorial, she gave me some prints to work on. She sells some of her work, and these were printed dresses that had been ordered so I spent a couple of hours going through the illustrations and making sure they were all good to send to the printers that night.

We then had the fitting just after lunch, so helped with  dressing the model, taking notes and photographing toiles that got approval from the course director, Shelly. It was great to be involved with the fitting, and interesting to hear all the comments both good and bad.

After the fitting I went to meet Steph as I'd promised to go with her on a ferry to look for locations for the photographer she is working with. We walked a little bit round Brooklyn to the ferry port called DUMBO (how cute!)

Note: The cute couple we watched get engaged, aaw!

After our little ferry trip, we jumped off at Wall St, picked up a parcel from the coolest doorman of one the fanciest apartments on Park Ave, then went for dinner in a fairly average Italian place :)

oh, and I finally bought some trainers!

Thursday 19.04.2012

Today was pants. I just didn't feel like myself today, at all.

I did some more sourcing, ran a few errands,  and I re-cut some patterns that had been changed in the fitting.
Thursday I didn't make any notes in my diary so clearly wasn't with it at all and the days at end of this week have all kinda of blurred into one...

Friday 20.04.2012

I bought the incredible neon yellow leather. It was bizarre handing over someone else's credit card, I like to spend but when someone asks for that much money it's a shock whether you're paying or not!

I bought 3 skins, and then went to an equipment suppliers to but new rotary cutters to cut out the pieces when I got back to the studio. Luckily one of the other designers didn't want one of the seamstresses that afternoon so whilst I worked on pattern alterations from the fitting, I watched this lady sew up this pair of leather trousers so quickly and amazingly it made my head spin; and it wasn't just the neon!

Saturday 21.04.2012

Yes, work on a Saturday! Evil Carly, evil...
Only kidding. I swapped my Saturday for Monday as Carly can't be in Monday; in a way it's better because NYC is mad hectic on a Saturday anyway!

Today was a super productive day in the studio, which made me really happy as I'd felt guilty for not being on top-form on Thursday. I managed to make up the lining for the leather trousers, which I was pretty nervous about doing as it was the first thing I'd done for one of her final garments. I also completed a toile for one of the fully printed and panelled sweater dresses and nearly completed the toile for the over-sized bomber jacket. However, as it had got to the end of the day, I ended up sewing a sleeve into a cut-out in the back rather than an armhole...oops! Luckily Carly found it funny, and it'd got to the point in the day where everyone needed a laugh so I'm glad me messing up cheered some people up :) though I'll be sure to fix it on Tuesday when I am next in!

After work, I met Steph and Fia for dinner and we went to a little Greek place. Unfortunately, the staff were rude and the food was ok, but too greasy. So from there we just decided to spend some time in Times Square being silly/giddy, touristy and generally enjoying the bright lights at night time :)

Steph being all beautiful, me being all silly and Fia hiding from cameras...sounds pretty much like our story in New York!

(sorry Steph, stole your photos!)
